Finding that self-discipline was not working for me, I read an article about Body Mechanics and recognized Shane from our cycling group. He had always seemed to be an approachable person and I immediately felt comfortable when I asked if he could help me sort myself out.

I had not intended to be a competitive athlete, but rather find a healthier place to be, as I was many years ago, which had somehow slipped into the past.

The environment around Shane and Sand1 is always encouraging and friendly. You are encouraged to find a level that is achievable, but slightly ahead of where you are at.

A kind of continuous improvement.

Their knowledge of all aspects of fitness and health gives you plenty of confidence that you are not subject to a simple prescribed formula. Your individual circumstances are always part of any programme that helps you achieve what’s wanted. A healthy lifestyle, that has now extended to endurance cycling and longer distance triathlons.

This past month I have been getting some solid miles in the legs as well as a bit of gym work with Shane at Body Mechanics. Shane and Sandi have been working with me during the ‘off-season’ for the past two years and their gym has everything I need plus a little bit more. Shane gives me a gym program and instructs me while I do it so that I am doing the exercises with the right technique, and to make sure I don’t get lazy and rest for longer then I need to!!

That’s a lot of thank you’s in a blog post. The support I get from these people is overwhelming and there are not enough words to thank them for what they do for me.

Triathlon

I approached Shane with a little bit of base fitness and a few goals around what I wanted to achieve in triathlon. With his guidance and structured training schedule I was able to complete a Half Ironman in good time with only 12 weeks training. His communication throughout my training was fantastic, always available to talk and discuss certain aspects and tweak if need be. His knowledge on body physiology and mechanics are a huge advantage when you get into the finer points of recovery and performance. For anyone considering taking their abilities to the next level Shane and Sandi are a superb combination and have opened my eyes to a sport that I now love and am passionate about.

Ironman

After many years of telling myself that I would never ever do Ironman, in 2012 I decided to seize the day and I entered Ironman Taupo.  I needed a good coach so I contacted Sandi and arranged a meeting.  Right from the start I knew I wanted her to coach me, her positive attitude and enthusiasm was infectious…maybe I was going to be able to do this after all!

Sandi coached me for a year leading up to Ironman and during that time my endurance, strength and confidence improved hugely.  Ironman training has lots of highs and lows and she was there supporting and encouraging me the whole way, she believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.

On 2nd March 2013 I became an Ironman!!!  Something I had thought was impossible was made possible with the help, guidance and support from Sandi.  So THANK YOU Sandi for making me realise that nothing is impossible if you just put your mind to it!

Shane trained my husband, Hugh, and myself 2 years ago, through Ironman 2010.

We were both novice triathletes, and needed lots of guidance with our training programmes and schedules, as well as with our diet, and rest regimes.  Shane did an awesome job and got us both through in under 13 hours, in what was a very enjoyable day – largely due to his guidance!  Shane has a very calming and encouraging approach to coaching, and always makes you feel that you are the focus, taking total interest in your progress and results.

I cannot speak highly enough of his professionalism and committment.

Mountain Biking

In 2010, I had a 400km endurance road race planned so I approached Shane to get some advice around nutrition, flexibility and strength training.

From the outset I was impressed with Shane’s enthusiasm and professionalism. He has knowledge that’s second to none and it was easy to trust in what he was saying as I’ve seen him ride and know that he “walks the walk.   Shane gave me a detailed day to day nutrition plan and also showed me the best flexibility and strength techniques to achieve my goals during the race.

All of this gave me tremendous confidence in the base fitness that I had leading into the event. This helped me ignore the self doubt that most athletes have at one time or another around whether we’ve over or under trained.  I managed to finish the race in 3rd place with a time of 13hours (beating the previous race record by over 1 hour).

In May 2011, I used the same principals that Shane had taught me to help me through the Cateye 24 Hour Moonride Mountain Bike Race in Rotorua. I completed this race as a solo rider and managed to win the Solo section beating 2nd place by 5 laps (approx. 3 hours)

In my view, this wouldn’t have been possible without Shane’s expertise and guidance.

Swimming

Shane has been part of our coaching support structure since October 2001, providing gym based Personal Training services to our swimmers.  In particular he has asisted in the preparation of Moss Burmester who recently gained selection for the 2002 Commonwaelth Games Swim Team.

Shane carries out his services with the utmost professionalism.  This has been demonsrated by his ability to adapt to the needs of elite swimmers, their different strokes and training patterns.  His expert knowledge of anatomy, physiology and dietry requirments has been of immense value to our programme.

Beach Volleyball

After being involved in the NZ Beach Volleyball Academy and playing in the NZ U19 indoor team I sustained a major shoulder problem.  Shane was recommeneded to me and got me back into working order.

Shane gave me a Beach Volleyball Specific Programme which has enabled me to get into the best possible physical condition and be injury free for my International Tournements.

When I first strated training with Shane I was ranked 16th in New Zealand.  I am now ranked number one in NZ and Ociania-Asia.  Without Shanes’ help, his dedication, enthusiasm and knowledge I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be where I am today.
